Hey guys! This year, DRR is going to try out Weekly Challenges with more specific prompts to try to promote more activity and writing from our writers. Stay tuned every Sunday for our new Challenge!
WEEKLY CHALLENGE 6/14 – 6/20:If you were a super-person, what would your powers be? (Be creative.) Would you use your powers to help people, exploit people, or some combination of both? What would happen in the first movie about you (plot? enemies? etc.)?
A few days late, here’s the results of Final Review from the end of January. We have no new Authors, and Selena has been dismissed from the blog due to a month of inactivity (her last post was published in January, but posted in December – the technicality might go in her favor but for the fact that that was her post for December, just in case anyone wants to get up in arms about this…).
This does leave us a bit short on writers, as it happens – we received an application last month, but are still waiting for that writer’s introduction post, so right now our active writer count sits at 5 – George, Fred, Jane, Isabel, and Noah. Well, in the old days the Admins ran this blog duo and we can do it again if we need, but having a variety of voices is really awesome – if you want to write or know anyone who might be interested, PLEASE apply using our application page. We have a very high acceptance rate, which some have described as “a very high acceptance rate,” and we love new writers (those that actually post, anyway!).
In other news, the Silver Icicle Award went to Jane H. Blood for her 8 posts – the most of any Contributor or Author – in December and January.
Now it’s February – a little under a year ago, we brought Victor on as our first guest writer. Maybe this year we’ll get another new person on Valentine’s Day – or Victor will reapply. You never know. Stranger things have happened.
Cynthia Ballantyne Memorial Award (for most posting by a female Author or Contributor in 2013) – Jane H. Blood with 26 posts
Frenzy Award (for most posting by an Author or Contributor in 2013) – TIE: Jane H. Blood and Kieran Adams with 26 posts
Observation Award (for best recent review pieces) – Kieran Adams
Unfortunately, due to a one-month lapse in posting, Kieran Adams has been dismissed from the blog. (Since awards were finalized at the same time as Final Review, applicable awards will still be given to him.) For the same reason, Delilah Flynn has also been dismissed from the blog.
A few changes are being made to the writer positions in 2014.
First of all, we want to clarify some recommendations and requirements for Contributors and Authors.
Contributors are not considered to be on the DRR staff.
Contributors will be added during the application period (Month 1st to Month 15th).
After the 15th of a month we will no longer accept applications for Contributor positions.
During Final Review, the Admins can choose to promote a Contributor to Author, keep a Contributor where he/she is, or dismiss the Contributor from the blog based on performance.
Contributors MUST post at least once per month (e.g. once during the month of December, January, etc., NOT once every 30 days) or they will be dismissed from the blog.
We recommend that all Contributors aim to post 3-4 times per month.
Authors are considered to be on the DRR staff (we trust you more and someday we might send you a cake for your birthday).
All Authors will get their own personal page in the drop-down menu under the “About the Authors” tab.
Authors will be promoted effective Month 1st.
During Final Review, the Admins can choose to keep an Author where he/she is or demote an Author to Contributor.
Authors MUST post at least three times per month to keep their staff status.
We recommend that all Authors aim to post 5-8 times per month.
Second of all, we now have Awards and Ranks to reward dedicated and/or popular writers!
Awards – An award will be given out after Final Review of the month stated (e.g. an award released in “March” will actually be announced April 1, since the decision will be held at midnight on March 31 and all posts up to that point will be considered).
The Victor T. Paulsen Memorial Awardwill go to the Contributor or Author who, in the opinion of the Admins, has written the most controversial (and sometimes annoying) posts recently. Will be awarded in June and December.
The Hamilton J. Christopher III Memorial Award will go to the Contributor or Author who, in the opinion of the Admins, has written the best prose piece of the year. Will be awarded in December.
The Cynthia Ballantyne Memorial Award will go to the female Contributor or Author who has posted the most in the past year (posts must be acceptable length – 300+ words at minimum – to qualify). Will be awarded in December.
The Frenzy Award will go to the Contributor or Author who has posted the most in the past year (see above requirement for post length). Will be awarded in December.
The Observation Award will go to the Contributor or Author who, in the opinion of the Admins, has written the best reviews recently. Will be awarded in June and December.
The Summer Sun Award will go to the Author or Contributor who posts the most in the month of July (see above requirement for post length). Will be awarded in July.
The Silver Icicle Award will go to the Author or Contributor who posts the most (see above requirement for post length) in the months of December and January combined. Will be awarded in January.
