I recently started playing Civilization, and now that I’m on break I have time to play more frequently and consistently. I saw Rose the other day and we played a game for around four hours – she played as Genghis Khan of Mongolia and I as Catherine the Great of Russia. We didn’t even manage to find each other on the map that day, but after she left the game got quite interesting – Darius I of Persia created a World Congress, the Aztecs were almost immediately shunned by everyone, Mongolia’s now-AI commander led her to war against Germany, and I was eventually double-teamed by the combined forces of India and Persia (though I never finished the game, so I may still manage to survive their assault).
When I started my next (singleplayer) game, however, I realized that the Mongolia vs. Germany thing may actually be written into the AI personalities. The first thing I did in my new game was explore, and I quickly ran into Genghis Khan (not controlled by Rose at all this time, but AI from the beginning) who quickly befriended me and just as quickly enlisted me as his ally in a war against Germany.
Now… first of all… Germany ended our war by GIVING US TWO OF HER CITIES… which doesn’t seem to make much sense. But after that war ended, Genghis Khan started another one. And another one. All against Germany. Right now we’re converging on Berlin and I think we’re going to wipe the civilization of Germany clean off the map when we get there. (I’m still in the Medieval age, by the way…)
If this is a real thing that the AI are programmed with, it’s pretty cool (although it makes no historical sense, really) and I like it. I’m always allies with Mongolia (subconsciously, I think Rose is always Genghis Khan) and I typically go to war against Germany in Civilization, so it works for me.
As always, thanks for reading!
