So I recently started watching Shingeki no Kyojin, also known as Attack on Titan in English. It’s an anime, and one of the first I’ve watched, so please forgive me (Kieran) if I use incorrect terminology or am otherwise ignorant about anime in general.
The show is pretty awesome. It revolves around Mankind’s fight for survival against the monstrous Titans centuries in the future, and the cast is a group of soldiers who fight the Titans. Mankind has holed up in three Walls (Maria, Rose, and Sina) behind which they hide from the Titan threat. However, when the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan appear in the year 845 and breach Wall Maria, humanity is threatened. A group of soldiers, including Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Ariert, as well as veterans Levi and Hanji Zoe, eventually wind up in the city of Trost in 850 defending against another Titan attack.
The fighting equipment used by the soldiers is called Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear (it’s probably a neater phrase in Japanese!). It’s basically a system of grappling hooks, gas propellant, and swords that allows the soldiers to navigate to the Titans’ weak spots (the backs of their necks) and slice through it. A blow anywhere else is useless, as Titans can regenerate their bodies.
Though I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all the characters (and haven’t gotten the chance to watch every episode yet) it is a very good show so far. The battle scenes are incredibly intense, and they make up most of the show; the other scenes are very dramatic and emotional. All in all – great show, and I’ll post in more detail about it at some point.
