Avenged Sevenfold (my favorite band) just released a lead single for their new album Hail to the King.
M. Shadows (lead singer and basically the leader of the band) said the band is trying to go for a simpler, more badass, “classic metal,” feel with the new album. I definitely hear that in the single, which you can listen to here. Individual parts are fairly exposed and the complex harmonies and sound-blending, usually key elements of an A7X song, have been replaced with relatively simple and single-melody guitar riffs, rhythmic chords, and steady bass lines. The drums are toned down, too, in terms of complexity, but what the song has not lost is the power and drive that Sevenfold nails so perfectly.
All in all, this song sounds more like a hard rock song than a metal song, but I like it a lot. The intro is cool, the beat is pretty driving, and M. Shadows delivers a pretty fantastic performance, especially during the chorus. Nothing incredibly special about this song, but it shows that Avenged Sevenfold has still got it, and that makes me very optimistic about the new album.
As always, thanks for reading!
