I’m currently on a bus headed back to Philadelphia. Why, you ask? Well, I went up to the Academy over the weekend, as mentioned in an earlier post. I know I was just there, and all of you will probably be disgusted with my squandering of money on all those bus and train rides. But this weekend was very important: I was invited, by Rose, to the Academy’s second annual Homecoming dance!
The dance bore the theme of “Gatsby,” which personally I felt might just as well have been called, “Academy dress code.” People did a great job dressing up, though, and the place looked phenomenal. People went all-out on the decorations, and there were candles and lamps and things everywhere. The candles lining the path to the dancefloor were battery-operated fake ones, so I borrowed two of them permanently and gave one to Rose. (I don’t like the term “theft.”)
Rose and I spent most of the weekend together, though I also spent a lot of time with Jane and even made a new friend – Aaron!
Aaron is a really cool guy. He and I made a lot of the same jokes and he has a great sense of humor, so we got along pretty quickly. I don’t know much about him since I just met him, but I know that he’s an exchange student and that he’s decent at Risk. The game the four of us played was pretty fantastic, actually – Jane settled into Europe, protecting her homeland; I controlled the Americas; Rose actually managed to control the entirety of Asia for at least a full turn, and possibly two; Aaron held Australia and Africa for most of the game. After settling into their arrangements fairly quickly after the start of the game, Aaron and Jane engaged in a long series of skirmishes in central Europe, giving time for me and Rose to establish our twin empires. Eventually, Jane pushed Aaron out of Europe and began to invade Rose’s Asian empire, at which point I finally broke my long-standing peace with the rest of the world and attacked, decimating most of Europe and Africa in a turn. I finally managed to eliminate Jane a few turns later and set my sights on Aaron, who was continuing to assault Rose’s territories from his last major holdouts in Siam and China. At that point, however, he surrendered his territories to Rose; the two of us decided to rule the world together, ending the game in a peace treaty.
The dance was wonderful – I got to spend a lot of time with Rose dancing and walking around looking at all the little, warm, glowing candles. Rose and I spun around and jumped around and had a lot of fun. We saw lots of people we knew and had smoothies. I got to hold her in my arms and kiss her a lot, and sometimes I made her giggle. It was just wonderful, the whole night.
At the end of the evening it turns out that Aaron had gotten dumped (by Madison, who he had been dating) so he walked with us back to Rose and Jane’s dorm. I was staying in the same dorm he lives in, so we went up there together afterwards. The next morning, everyone met up for brunch (after I had a quick swim) and shortly thereafter I bid farewell to Rose and returned to Philadelphia.
It was a wonderful weekend that I will always remember when I see a little glowing candle.
As always, thanks for reading.
